In the beginning, poetry was magic: people believed that charms and spells, rhythmical arrangements of the sounds of language, had the power to transform reality. Then poetry became song, melodious words to accompany human work and play. Today poetry still is the first form of literature we come across as children: even babies love the sound and rhythm of nursery rhymes and lullabies. Yet as we get older, most of us grow out of this first wonder and joy at the magic of beautifully sounding, rhythmical words. Instead, we come to believe poetry is boring, difficult and irrelevant to our daily lives – so much so that the German poet Hans Magnus Enzensberger claimed that the number of poetry readers in any given nation is exactly 1354. At the same time, however, most of us still enjoy poetry as song: we tap our feet to the rhythm, learn the lyrics by heart and sing them in the shower.

In this meeting of Akademia na językach we are going to practise our English by talking about some contemporary poems about poetry. We will see what we can make of them – and whether modern poetry really is difficult, boring or irrelevant.

Edwardsa (Ku poetyce chrześcijańskiej, Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Gdańskiego 2017).

dr Magdalena Wawrzyniak-Śliwska – anglistka, pedagożka, specjalistka ds. dydaktyki języka angielskiego, kształcenia nauczycieli, jakości kształcenia oraz międzynarodowych projektów eTwinning. Adiunkt w Instytucie Anglistyki i Amerykanistyki Uniwersytetu Gdańskiego. Redaktorka książek oraz autorka artykułów na temat dydaktyki języków obcych i metodologii badań.
